Acorns to Oaks - Teens Mentoring Grade School Students [WELLS-OGUNQUIT] Thursday 03/10/05 10:22 AM
The Wells-Ogonquit Community School is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide a mentoring program between grade school and high school students. Third and fourth grade students are paired with high school students for activities and community service events.
The goal of the program is to establish a community-wide code of conduct that nurtures social responsibility.
The benefits of the program are that the older students learn and experience self confidence in their leadership abilities. The younger children get valuable one on one time as well as the important feeling of inclusion during group activities.
How the program works: Mentor pairs meet weekly to play games, make crafts or participate in group events. One event was to make snowflake decorations for a senior center. Another event was making and performing a set of puppet shows for a local day care center.
Mentors are matched with mentees based on similar life experiences and before the mentorships begin, the high school mentors participate in training from Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Both mentor and mentee learn to respect the value of giving in different ways to the community.
