Before you start a mentorship, answer these questions. [Journal Sentinel] Tuesday 03/22/05 8:38 AM
- What: What skill or knowledge do you want to learn? The answer should be a specific, measurable skill or piece of knowledge.
- How: How will you learn this skill or knowledge and how long will it take? Describe how you envision interacting with the mentor to learn the desired skill. Possibilities range from work shadowing to casual conversations. An estimate of duration is important for both you and the mentor to know what kind of commitment you are making before you make it.
- Who: To find the right person or people as mentors, the first step of course is to find someone who knows what you want to know. Next, find out if the person is capable of and open to teaching the skill, and in a way that matches your capabilities. Personality and style are important considerations. Ask advice from potential mentors and see if their responses are useful to you.
- Commitment: Are you willing to put in the time and energy to learn the desired skill?
