New Mentoring Program For Professional Immigrants [Mississauga News] Thursday 04/07/05 8:03 AM
A new mentoring program in Canada helps professional immigrants land jobs in the area of their expertise. Doctors, bankers, and other highly educated immigrants often have a hard time working in their industry because of the problems of validating their skills and training. The skills need to be validated by a local source, and getting that validation is hard to come by.
The mentor program pairs up working professionals with immigrants that have the same training from their country of origin. The goal of the program is to help the immigrants land the first job in their area of expertise, which is often the critical hurdle to entry into the mainstream workforce. This is especially important to the Peel region of Ontario where immigrants represent 43% of the population. Tapping into this highly skilled workforce has already proven itself in Toronto and York where similar programs are in place.
How the program works: volunteers from top government and corporate headquarters contribute 24 hours of their time over 4 month period to guide the proteges' job search.
